Names of God – Pt 10

(Psalm 48:10) – As is Your name, God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness.

Jehovah Kebodhi – “God My Glory” (Psalm 3:3)

We begin this post looking at the Names of God found in the Psalms. Remember David was “a man after God’s own heart” and he wrote most of the Psalms in Scripture. There are many Names of God revealed in The Psalms so take some time, as I pray you have been, to let it sink in how God personally desires to be with each of us, and with us collectively as The Body of Christ, His Church.

The first name we see is found in Psalm 3:3 – JEHOVAH KEBODHI – GOD MY GLORY! In this Psalm David is fleeing from Absalom, his son, who is leading a revolt against him to overtake the Kingdom of Israel that God has given to David.

In a great cry of humility David proclaims that, even as the king, it is God who is His protector and shield and God is His Glory. What He has received… everything, including any and all glory, comes from God, and specifically, even the glory he has attained as king because JEHOVAH KEBODHI – GOD MY GLORY, has given it!

We have, and should fully and humbly acknowledge, just as King David did, God in Christ is our JEHOVAH KEBODHI – GOD OUR GLORY. As with so many of these Names, we see this over and over again in The New Testament.

Here are some of the more poignant reminders that Christ is our Glory…2 Corinthians 4:4-6; 1 Peter 4:14. Any glory we have apart from Christ is futile and fading. Knowing Him as Savior and Lord allows us to be partakers of His Glory because He is our Glory!

Are you showing off your glory or His? Only one will last…choose wisely.

Jehovah Se’li – “God, My Rock” (Psalm 18:2)

As we continue to explore God’s Names we’re going to camp out in one verse that reveals 4 different Names of God to us. It’s not just the names but the fact that He makes Himself known to David, and to us as a very personal God, involved and active in our lives at all times.

Psalm 18:2 begins with David declaring that God is “JEHOVAH SEL’I – GOD, MY ROCK.” We found God as The Rock, The Rock of all His people collectively, in Deuteronomy 32:4. Here, however, we find that He is my Rock, very personal and intimate in my life.

Christ is “JEHOVAH SEL’I – GOD MY ROCK” as He is our steadfast, firm and sturdy Presence and Foundation through any storm or trial and he never changes. We see this in 1 Peter 2:4-7 where He is “The Living Stone,” who brings us to life and “the chosen and precious cornerstone” that will never fail. Because He is my Rock, I can count on Him always (Hebrews 13:5)!

I’ve come to realize that I need that Rock so that I can stand firm knowing He will never change and never leave me! I am secure in Him whether I’m standing on that Solid Rock or dwelling within the secure refuge of that Rock (cave and shelter)!

Jehovah Keren Yish’i – “The Horn (or Strength) of My Salvation” (Psalm 18:2)

As promised, moving along in Psalm 18:2 we look at the 2nd Name of God from this text and it is “JEHOVAH KEREN YISH’I – THE HORN (OR STRENGTH) OF MY SALVATION” (parentheses added). He is God our Strength and Savior who sees us through every situation. The context here is David praising and acknowledging God for rescuing him from His enemies. While He has led and fought in many of the battles, David knows assuredly that it is God’s Strength that saves him!

Christ is “JEHOVAH KEREN YISH’I – THE HORN (OR STRENGTH) OF MY SALVATION” (parentheses added). Because of His humility, He has become our strength and our salvation and we can find them in no other. Once again we find evidence of this throughout The New Testament and I will focus on 3 particular Scriptures that declare Him as our strength and salvation…

  1. Philippians 4:13 – we must understand the context of this well known and often quoted verse…Paul had suffered many hardships, much pain and betrayal and yet he declared that he could do all things through Christ who strengthened Him.
  2. The name of Jesus or Yeshua literally means all of the following… God delivers or rescues; Savior or God Saves! Acts 4:12 says it best…there is no other name given under all of heaven whereby we can be saved!
  3. We see this clear picture of Christ as Savior also in John 14:6 as there is no other way to God the Father than through God the Son!

Jesus is Jehovah Keren Yish’I – The Horn (or Strength) of My Salvation! Do you know Jesus as Savior? Are you walking in His Truth with Him as Lord? Or are you trying to make it by your own strength to save yourself? Surrender to Him as He has done everything to save us and we simply need to believe and submit to Him!

Love and Lordship…Food for Thought – Jehovah Kebodhi is “God my Glory” and any glory that does not come from Him is not worth it and will not last. He is also Jehovah Se’li – “God, My Rock” and I can count on Him as He will never change. Finally, I don’t have the strength or ability to keep myself from sin nor save myself but He is Jehovah Keren Yish’i – “The Horn (or Strength) of My Salvation”
